The apparent propagation velocity of a wave

Piero Villaggio (2001)

Atti della Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei. Classe di Scienze Fisiche, Matematiche e Naturali. Rendiconti Lincei. Matematica e Applicazioni

A one-dimensional model is proposed for determing the delay by which a wave reaching a certain point is effectively registered by a measuring instrument.

The Effect of Crystal-Melt Surface Energy on the Stability of Ultra-Thin Melt Films

M. Beerman, L. N. Brush (2008)

Mathematical Modelling of Natural Phenomena

The stability and evolution of very thin, single component, metallic-melt films is studied by analysis of coupled strongly nonlinear equations for gas-melt (GM) and crystal-melt (CM) interfaces, derived using the lubrication approximation. The crystal-melt interface is deformable by freezing and melting, and there is a thermal gradient applied across the film. Linear analysis reveals that there is a maximum applied far-field temperature in the gas, beyond which there is no film instability. Instabilities...

The entropy principle: from continuum mechanics to hyperbolic systems of balance laws

Tommaso Ruggeri (2005)

Bollettino dell'Unione Matematica Italiana

We discuss the different roles of the entropy principle in modern thermodynamics. We start with the approach of rational thermodynamics in which the entropy principle becomes a selection rule for physical constitutive equations. Then we discuss the entropy principle for selecting admissible discontinuous weak solutions and to symmetrize general systems of hyperbolic balance laws. A particular attention is given on the local and global well-posedness of the relative Cauchy problem for smooth solutions....

The optimization of heat radiation intensity

Mlýnek, Jaroslav, Srb, Radek (2013)

Programs and Algorithms of Numerical Mathematics

This article focuses on the problem of calculating the intensity of heat radiation and its optimization across the surface of an aluminium or nickel mould. The inner mould surface is sprinkled with a special PVC powder and the outer mould surface is warmed by infrared heaters located above the mould. In this way artificial leathers are produced in the car industry (e.g., the artificial leather on a car dashboard). The article includes a description of how a mathematical model allows us to calculate the...

The optimization of the stationary heat equation with a variable right-hand side

Ctirad Matyska (1986)

Aplikace matematiky

Solving the stationary heat equation we optimize the temperature on part of the boundary of the domain under investigation. First the Poisson equation is solved; both the Neumann condition on part of the boundary and the Newton condition on the rest are prescribed, the distribution of the heat sources being variable. In the second case, the heat equation also contains a convective term, the distribution of heat sources is specified and the Neumann condition is variable on part of the boundary.
