On fully practical finite element approximations of degenerate Cahn-Hilliard systems

John W. Barrett, James F. Blowey, Harald Garcke (2001)

ESAIM: Mathematical Modelling and Numerical Analysis - Modélisation Mathématique et Analyse Numérique

We consider a model for phase separation of a multi-component alloy with non-smooth free energy and a degenerate mobility matrix. In addition to showing well-posedness and stability bounds for our approximation, we prove convergence in one space dimension. Furthermore an iterative scheme for solving the resulting nonlinear discrete system is analysed. We discuss also how our approximation has to be modified in order to be applicable to a logarithmic free energy. Finally numerical experiments with...

On higher-order semilinear parabolic equations with measures as initial data

Victor Galaktionov (2004)

Journal of the European Mathematical Society

We consider 2 m th-order ( m 2 ) semilinear parabolic equations u t = ( Δ ) m u ± | u | p 1 u in N × + ( p > 1 ) , with Dirac’s mass δ ( x ) as the initial function. We show that for p < p 0 = 1 + 2 m / N , the Cauchy problem admits...

On iterative solution of nonlinear heat-conduction and diffusion problems

Herbert Gajewski (1977)

Aplikace matematiky

The present paper deals with the numerical solution of the nonlinear heat equation. An iterative method is suggested in which the iterations are obtained by solving linear heat equation. The convergence of the method is proved under very natural conditions on given input data of the original problem. Further, questions of convergence of the Galerkin method applied to the original equation as well as to the linear equations in the above mentioned iterative method are studied.

On nonlinear, nonconvex evolution inclusions

Nikolaos S. Papageorgiou (1995)

Discussiones Mathematicae, Differential Inclusions, Control and Optimization

We consider a nonlinear evolution inclusion driven by an m-accretive operator which generates an equicontinuous nonlinear semigroup of contractions. We establish the existence of extremal integral solutions and we show that they form a dense, G δ -subset of the solution set of the original Cauchy problem. As an application, we obtain “bang-bang”’ type theorems for two nonlinear parabolic distributed parameter control systems.

On solutions of a perturbed fast diffusion equation

Ján Filo (1987)

Aplikace matematiky

The paper concerns the (local and global) existence, nonexistence, uniqueness and some properties of nonnegative solutions of a nonlinear density dependent diffusion equation with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions.

On the Caginalp system with dynamic boundary conditions and singular potentials

Laurence Cherfils, Alain Miranville (2009)

Applications of Mathematics

This article is devoted to the study of the Caginalp phase field system with dynamic boundary conditions and singular potentials. We first show that, for initial data in H 2 , the solutions are strictly separated from the singularities of the potential. This turns out to be our main argument in the proof of the existence and uniqueness of solutions. We then prove the existence of global attractors. In the last part of the article, we adapt well-known results concerning the Łojasiewicz inequality in...

On the Cauchy problem for a class of parabolic equations with variable density

Shoshana Kamin, Robert Kersner, Alberto Tesei (1998)

Atti della Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei. Classe di Scienze Fisiche, Matematiche e Naturali. Rendiconti Lincei. Matematica e Applicazioni

The well-posedness of the Cauchy problem for a class of parabolic equations with variable density is investigated. Necessary and sufficient conditions for existence and uniqueness in the class of bounded solutions are proved. If these conditions fail, sufficient conditions are given to ensure well-posedness in the class of bounded solutions which satisfy suitable constraints at infinity.

On the Convective Cahn-Hilliard Equation

Changchun Liu (2005)

Bulletin of the Polish Academy of Sciences. Mathematics

The author studies the convective Cahn-Hilliard equation. Some results on the existence of classical solutions and asymptotic behavior of solutions are established. The instability of the traveling waves is also discussed.
