Forced anisotropic mean curvature flow of graphs in relative geometry

Dieu Hung Hoang, Michal Beneš (2014)

Mathematica Bohemica

The paper is concerned with the graph formulation of forced anisotropic mean curvature flow in the context of the heteroepitaxial growth of quantum dots. The problem is generalized by including anisotropy by means of Finsler metrics. A semi-discrete numerical scheme based on the method of lines is presented. Computational results with various anisotropy settings are shown and discussed.

Fully adaptive multiresolution schemes for strongly degenerate parabolic equations in one space dimension

Raimund Bürger, Ricardo Ruiz, Kai Schneider, Mauricio Sepúlveda (2008)

ESAIM: Mathematical Modelling and Numerical Analysis

We present a fully adaptive multiresolution scheme for spatially one-dimensional quasilinear strongly degenerate parabolic equations with zero-flux and periodic boundary conditions. The numerical scheme is based on a finite volume discretization using the Engquist-Osher numerical flux and explicit time stepping. An adaptive multiresolution scheme based on cell averages is then used to speed up the CPU time and the memory requirements of the underlying finite volume scheme, whose first-order...

Fundamental solutions and asymptotic behaviour for the p-Laplacian equation.

Soshana Kamin, Juan Luis Vázquez (1988)

Revista Matemática Iberoamericana

We establish the uniqueness of fundamental solutions to the p-Laplacian equationut = div (|Du|p-2 Du),   p > 2,defined for x ∈ RN, 0 < t < T. We derive from this result the asymptotic behavoir of nonnegative solutions with finite mass, i.e., such that u(*,t) ∈ L1(RN). Our methods also apply to the porous medium equationut = ∆(um),   m > 1,giving new and simpler proofs of known results. We finally introduce yet another method of proving asymptotic results based on the...

Generation of Interface for an Allen-Cahn Equation with Nonlinear Diffusion

M. Alfaro, D. Hilhorst (2010)

Mathematical Modelling of Natural Phenomena

In this note, we consider a nonlinear diffusion equation with a bistable reaction term arising in population dynamics. Given a rather general initial data, we investigate its behavior for small times as the reaction coefficient tends to infinity: we prove a generation of interface property.

Global and non-global existence of solutions to a nonlocal and degenerate quasilinear parabolic system

Yujuan Chen (2010)

Czechoslovak Mathematical Journal

The paper deals with positive solutions of a nonlocal and degenerate quasilinear parabolic system not in divergence form u t = v p Δ u + a Ω u d x , v t = u q Δ v + b Ω v d x with null Dirichlet boundary conditions. By using the standard approximation method, we first give a series of fine a priori estimates for the solution of the corresponding approximate problem. Then using the diagonal method, we get the local existence and the bounds of the solution ( u , v ) to this problem. Moreover, a necessary and sufficient condition for the non-global existence...

Global Attractors for a Class of Semilinear Degenerate Parabolic Equations on N

Cung The Anh, Le Thi Thuy (2013)

Bulletin of the Polish Academy of Sciences. Mathematics

We prove the existence of global attractors for the following semilinear degenerate parabolic equation on N : ∂u/∂t - div(σ(x)∇ u) + λu + f(x,u) = g(x), under a new condition concerning the variable nonnegative diffusivity σ(·) and for an arbitrary polynomial growth order of the nonlinearity f. To overcome some difficulties caused by the lack of compactness of the embeddings, these results are proved by combining the tail estimates method and the asymptotic a priori estimate method.

Global existence of solutions to a chemotaxis system with volume filling effect

Tomasz Cieślak (2008)

Colloquium Mathematicae

A system of quasilinear parabolic equations modelling chemotaxis and taking into account the volume filling effect is studied under no-flux boundary conditions. The resulting system is non-uniformly parabolic. A Lyapunov functional for the system is constructed. The proof of existence and uniqueness of regular global-in-time solutions is given in cases when either the Lyapunov functional is bounded from below or chemotactic forces are suitably weakened. In the first case solutions are uniformly...
