Attractors with vanishing rotation number

Rafael Ortega, Francisco Ruiz del Portal (2011)

Journal of the European Mathematical Society

Given an orientation-preserving homeomorphism of the plane, a rotation number can be associated with each locally attracting fixed point. Assuming that the homeomorphism is dissipative and the rotation number vanishes we prove the existence of a second fixed point. The main tools in the proof are Carath´eodory prime ends and fixed point index. The result is applicable to some concrete problems in the theory of periodic differential equations.

Billiard complexity in the hypercube

Nicolas Bedaride, Pascal Hubert (2007)

Annales de l’institut Fourier

We consider the billiard map in the hypercube of d . We obtain a language by coding the billiard map by the faces of the hypercube. We investigate the complexity function of this language. We prove that n 3 d - 3 is the order of magnitude of the complexity.

Borel summation and splitting of separatrices for the Hénon map

Vassili Gelfreich, David Sauzin (2001)

Annales de l’institut Fourier

We study two complex invariant manifolds associated with the parabolic fixed point of the area-preserving Hénon map. A single formal power series corresponds to both of them. The Borel transform of the formal series defines an analytic germ. We explore the Riemann surface and singularities of its analytic continuation. In particular we give a complete description of the “first” singularity and prove that a constant, which describes the splitting of the invariant manifolds, does not vanish. An interpretation...

Breaking the continuity of a piecewise linear map

Viktor Avrutin, Michael Schanz, Björn Schenke (2012)

ESAIM: Proceedings

Knowledge about the behavior of discontinuous piecewise-linear maps is important for a wide range of applications. An efficient way to investigate the bifurcation structure in 2D parameter spaces of such maps is to detect specific codimension-2 bifurcation points, called organizing centers, and to describe the bifurcation structure in their neighborhood. In this work, we present the organizing centers in the 1D discontinuous piecewise-linear map...

Central limit theorem for sampled sums of dependent random variables

Nadine Guillotin-Plantard, Clémentine Prieur (2010)

ESAIM: Probability and Statistics

We prove a central limit theorem for linear triangular arrays under weak dependence conditions. Our result is then applied to dependent random variables sampled by a -valued transient random walk. This extends the results obtained by [N. Guillotin-Plantard and D. Schneider, Stoch. Dynamics3 (2003) 477–497]. An application to parametric estimation by random sampling is also provided.

Characterization of ω -limit sets of continuous maps of the circle

David Pokluda (2002)

Commentationes Mathematicae Universitatis Carolinae

In this paper we extend results of Blokh, Bruckner, Humke and Sm’ıtal [Trans. Amer. Math. Soc. 348 (1996), 1357–1372] about characterization of ω -limit sets from the class 𝒞 ( I , I ) of continuous maps of the interval to the class 𝒞 ( 𝕊 , 𝕊 ) of continuous maps of the circle. Among others we give geometric characterization of ω -limit sets and then we prove that the family of ω -limit sets is closed with respect to the Hausdorff metric.

Combinatorial mapping-torus, branched surfaces and free group automorphisms

François Gautero (2007)

Annali della Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa - Classe di Scienze

We give a characterization of the geometric automorphisms in a certain class of (not necessarily irreducible) free group automorphisms. When the automorphism is geometric, then it is induced by a pseudo-Anosov homeomorphism without interior singularities. An outer free group automorphism is given by a 1 -cocycle of a 2 -complex (a standard dynamical branched surface, see [7] and [9]) the fundamental group of which is the mapping-torus group of the automorphism. A combinatorial construction elucidates...

Combinatorics of distance doubling maps

Karsten Keller, Steffen Winter (2005)

Fundamenta Mathematicae

We study the combinatorics of distance doubling maps on the circle ℝ/ℤ with prototypes h(β) = 2β mod 1 and h̅(β) = -2β mod 1, representing the orientation preserving and orientation reversing case, respectively. In particular, we identify parts of the circle where the iterates f n of a distance doubling map f exhibit “distance doubling behavior”. The results include well known statements for h related to the structure of the Mandelbrot set M. For h̅ they suggest some analogies to the structure of...
