Extension of smooth functions in infinite dimensions II: manifolds

C. J. Atkin (2002)

Studia Mathematica

Let M be a separable C Finsler manifold of infinite dimension. Then it is proved, amongst other results, that under suitable conditions of local extensibility the germ of a C function, or of a C section of a vector bundle, on the union of a closed submanifold and a closed locally compact set in M, extends to a C function on the whole of M.

Finite element analysis of a simplified stochastic Hookean dumbbells model arising from viscoelastic flows

Andrea Bonito, Philippe Clément, Marco Picasso (2006)

ESAIM: Mathematical Modelling and Numerical Analysis

A simplified stochastic Hookean dumbbells model arising from viscoelastic flows is considered, the convective terms being disregarded. A finite element discretization in space is proposed. Existence of the numerical solution is proved for small data, so as a priori error estimates, using an implicit function theorem and regularity results obtained in [Bonito et al., J. Evol. Equ.6 (2006) 381–398] for the solution of the continuous problem. A posteriori error estimates are also derived. Numerical...

Fréchet differentiability via partial Fréchet differentiability

Luděk Zajíček (2023)

Commentationes Mathematicae Universitatis Carolinae

Let X 1 , , X n be Banach spaces and f a real function on X = X 1 × × X n . Let A f be the set of all points x X at which f is partially Fréchet differentiable but is not Fréchet differentiable. Our results imply that if X 1 , , X n - 1 are Asplund spaces and f is continuous (respectively Lipschitz) on X , then A f is a first category set (respectively a σ -upper porous set). We also prove that if X , Y are separable Banach spaces and f : X Y is a Lipschitz mapping, then there exists a σ -upper porous set A X such that f is Fréchet differentiable at every...

Fully summing mappings between Banach spaces

Mário C. Matos, Daniel M. Pellegrino (2007)

Studia Mathematica

We introduce and investigate the non-n-linear concept of fully summing mappings; if n = 1 this concept coincides with the notion of nonlinear absolutely summing mappings and in this sense this article unifies these two theories. We also introduce a non-n-linear definition of Hilbert-Schmidt mappings and sketch connections between this concept and fully summing mappings.

Impact of the variations of the mixing length in a first order turbulent closure system

Françoise Brossier, Roger Lewandowski (2002)

ESAIM: Mathematical Modelling and Numerical Analysis - Modélisation Mathématique et Analyse Numérique

This paper is devoted to the study of a turbulent circulation model. Equations are derived from the “Navier-Stokes turbulent kinetic energy” system. Some simplifications are performed but attention is focused on non linearities linked to turbulent eddy viscosity ν t . The mixing length acts as a parameter which controls the turbulent part in ν t . The main theoretical results that we have obtained concern the uniqueness of the solution for bounded eddy viscosities and small values of and its asymptotic...

Inf-convolution and regularization of convex functions on Riemannian manifolds of nonpositive curvature.

Daniel Azagra, Juan Ferrera (2006)

Revista Matemática Complutense

We show how an operation of inf-convolution can be used to approximate convex functions with C1 smooth convex functions on Riemannian manifolds with nonpositive curvature (in a manner that not only is explicit but also preserves some other properties of the original functions, such as ordering, symmetries, infima and sets of minimizers), and we give some applications.

Infinite-dimensional hyperkähler manifolds associated with Hermitian-symmetric affine coadjoint orbits

Alice Barbara Tumpach (2009)

Annales de l’institut Fourier

In this paper, we construct a hyperkähler structure on the complexification 𝒪 of any Hermitian symmetric affine coadjoint orbit 𝒪 of a semi-simple L * -group of compact type, which is compatible with the complex symplectic form of Kirillov-Kostant-Souriau and restricts to the Kähler structure of 𝒪 . By a relevant identification of the complex orbit 𝒪 with the cotangent space T 𝒪 of 𝒪 induced by Mostow’s decomposition theorem, this leads to the existence of a hyperkähler structure on T 𝒪 compatible with...

Injections de Sobolev probabilistes et applications

Nicolas Burq, Gilles Lebeau (2013)

Lie groupoids of mappings taking values in a Lie groupoid

Habib Amiri, Helge Glöckner, Alexander Schmeding (2020)

Archivum Mathematicum

Endowing differentiable functions from a compact manifold to a Lie group with the pointwise group operations one obtains the so-called current groups and, as a special case, loop groups. These are prime examples of infinite-dimensional Lie groups modelled on locally convex spaces. In the present paper, we generalise this construction and show that differentiable mappings on a compact manifold (possibly with boundary) with values in a Lie groupoid form infinite-dimensional Lie groupoids which we...

Lipschitz and uniform embeddings into

N. J. Kalton (2011)

Fundamenta Mathematicae

We show that there is no uniformly continuous selection of the quotient map Q : / c relative to the unit ball. We use this to construct an answer to a problem of Benyamini and Lindenstrauss; there is a Banach space X such that there is a no Lipschitz retraction of X** onto X; in fact there is no uniformly continuous retraction from B X * * onto B X .

Lipschitz-free Banach spaces

G. Godefroy, N. J. Kalton (2003)

Studia Mathematica

We show that when a linear quotient map to a separable Banach space X has a Lipschitz right inverse, then it has a linear right inverse. If a separable space X embeds isometrically into a Banach space Y, then Y contains an isometric linear copy of X. This is false for every nonseparable weakly compactly generated Banach space X. Canonical examples of nonseparable Banach spaces which are Lipschitz isomorphic but not linearly isomorphic are constructed. If a Banach space X has the bounded approximation...

Manifold-valued generalized functions in full Colombeau spaces

Michael Kunzinger, Eduard Nigsch (2011)

Commentationes Mathematicae Universitatis Carolinae

We introduce the notion of generalized function taking values in a smooth manifold into the setting of full Colombeau algebras. After deriving a number of characterization results we also introduce a corresponding concept of generalized vector bundle homomorphisms and, based on this, provide a definition of tangent map for such generalized functions.

Maximal regularity, the local inverse function theorem, and local well-posedness for the curve shortening flow

Sahbi Boussandel, Ralph Chill, Eva Fašangová (2012)

Czechoslovak Mathematical Journal

Local well-posedness of the curve shortening flow, that is, local existence, uniqueness and smooth dependence of solutions on initial data, is proved by applying the Local Inverse Function Theorem and L 2 -maximal regularity results for linear parabolic equations. The application of the Local Inverse Function Theorem leads to a particularly short proof which gives in addition the space-time regularity of the solutions. The method may be applied to general nonlinear evolution equations, but is presented...
