A Dual Approach for Matrix-Derivatives.
We present a Cauchy test for the almost derivability of additive functions of bounded BV sets. The test yields a full descriptive definition of a coordinate free Riemann type integral.
This paper describes a compact perceptual image model intended for morphological representation of the visual information contained in natural images. We explain why the total variation can be a criterion to split the information between the two main visual structures, which are the sketch and the microtextures. We deduce a morphological decomposition scheme, based on a segmentation where the borders of the regions correspond to the location of the topological singularities of a topographic map. This...
Suppose that, for each point x in a given subset E ⊂ Rn, we are given an m-jet f(x) and a convex, symmetric set σ(x) of m-jets at x. We ask whether there exist a function F ∈ Cm,w(Rn) and a finite constant M, such that the m-jet of F at x belongs to f(x) + Mσ(x) for all x ∈ E. We give a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of such F, M, provided each σ(x) satisfies a condition that we call "Whitnet w-convexity".
A continuous linear extension operator, different from Whitney’s, for -Whitney fields (p finite) on a closed o-minimal subset of is constructed. The construction is based on special geometrical properties of o-minimal sets earlier studied by K. Kurdyka with the author.
We construct a Lipschitz function f on X = ℝ ² such that, for each 0 ≠ v ∈ X, the function f is smooth on a.e. line parallel to v and f is Gâteaux non-differentiable at all points of X except a first category set. Consequently, the same holds if X (with dimX > 1) is an arbitrary Banach space and “a.e.” has any usual “measure sense”. This example gives an answer to a natural question concerning the author’s recent study of linearly essentially smooth functions (which generalize essentially smooth...
We present below a new series of conjectures and open problems in the fields of (global) Optimization and Matrix analysis, in the same spirit as our recently published paper [J.-B. Hiriart-Urruty, Potpourri of conjectures and open questions in Nonlinear analysis and Optimization. SIAM Review 49 (2007) 255–273]. With each problem come a succinct presentation, a list of specific references, and a view on the state of the art of the subject.
