The least eigenvalues of nonhomogeneous degenerated quasilinear eigenvalue problems

Pavel Drábek (1995)

Mathematica Bohemica

We prove the existence of the least positive eigenvalue with a corresponding nonnegative eigenfunction of the quasilinear eigenvalue problem - div ( a ( x , u ) | | p - 2 u ) = λ b ( x , u ) | u | p - 2 u in Ω , u = 0 on Ω , where Ω is a bounded domain, p > 1 is a real number and a ( x , u ) , b ( x , u ) satisfy appropriate growth conditions. Moreover, the coefficient a ( x , u ) contains a degeneration or a singularity. We work in a suitable weighted Sobolev space and prove the boundedness of the eigenfunction in L ( Ω ) . The main tool is the investigation of the associated homogeneous eigenvalue problem and an application...

The logarithmic delay of KPP fronts in a periodic medium

François Hamel, James Nolen, Jean-Michel Roquejoffre, Lenya Ryzhik (2016)

Journal of the European Mathematical Society

We extend, to parabolic equations of the KPP type in periodic media, a result of Bramson which asserts that, in the case of a spatially homogeneous reaction rate, the time lag between the position of an initially compactly supported solution and that of a traveling wave grows logarithmically in time.

The method of Rothe and two-scale convergence in nonlinear problems

Jiří Vala (2003)

Applications of Mathematics

Modelling of macroscopic behaviour of materials, consisting of several layers or components, cannot avoid their microstructural properties. This article demonstrates how the method of Rothe, described in the book of K. Rektorys The Method of Discretization in Time, together with the two-scale homogenization technique can be applied to the existence and convergence analysis of some strongly nonlinear time-dependent problems of this type.

The microstructure of Lipschitz solutions for a one-dimensional logarithmic diffusion equation

Nicole Schadewaldt (2011)

Commentationes Mathematicae Universitatis Carolinae

We consider the initial-boundary-value problem for the one-dimensional fast diffusion equation u t = [ sign ( u x ) log | u x | ] x on Q T = [ 0 , T ] × [ 0 , l ] . For monotone initial data the existence of classical solutions is known. The case of non-monotone initial data is delicate since the equation is singular at u x = 0 . We ‘explicitly’ construct infinitely many weak Lipschitz solutions to non-monotone initial data following an approach to the Perona-Malik equation. For this construction we rephrase the problem as a differential inclusion which enables us...

The mixed regularity of electronic wave functions multiplied by explicit correlation factors

Harry Yserentant (2011)

ESAIM: Mathematical Modelling and Numerical Analysis - Modélisation Mathématique et Analyse Numérique

The electronic Schrödinger equation describes the motion of N electrons under Coulomb interaction forces in a field of clamped nuclei. The solutions of this equation, the electronic wave functions, depend on 3N variables, three spatial dimensions for each electron. Approximating them is thus inordinately challenging. As is shown in the author's monograph [Yserentant, Lecture Notes in Mathematics 2000, Springer (2010)], the regularity of the solutions, which increases with the number of electrons,...

THE Navier-stokes flow around a rotating obstacle with time-dependent body force

Toshiaki Hishida (2009)

Banach Center Publications

We study the motion of a viscous incompressible fluid filling the whole three-dimensional space exterior to a rigid body, that is rotating with constant angular velocity ω, under the action of external force f. By using a frame attached to the body, the equations are reduced to (1.1) in a fixed exterior domain D. Given f = divF with F B U C ( ; L 3 / 2 , ( D ) ) , we consider this problem in D × ℝ and prove that there exists a unique solution u B U C ( ; L 3 , ( D ) ) when F and |ω| are sufficiently small. If, in particular, the external force for...

The nonlinear membrane model : a Young measure and varifold formulation

Med Lamine Leghmizi, Christian Licht, Gérard Michaille (2005)

ESAIM: Control, Optimisation and Calculus of Variations

We establish two new formulations of the membrane problem by working in the space of W Γ 0 1 , p ( Ω , 𝐑 3 ) -Young measures and W Γ 0 1 , p ( Ω , 𝐑 3 ) -varifolds. The energy functional related to these formulations is obtained as a limit of the 3 d formulation of the behavior of a thin layer for a suitable variational convergence associated with the narrow convergence of Young measures and with some weak convergence of varifolds. The interest of the first formulation is to encode the oscillation informations on the gradients minimizing sequences...
