Magnetic vortices for a Ginzburg-Landau type energy with discontinuous constraint

Ayman Kachmar (2010)

ESAIM: Control, Optimisation and Calculus of Variations

This paper is devoted to an analysis of vortex-nucleation for a Ginzburg-Landau functional with discontinuous constraint. This functional has been proposed as a model for vortex-pinning, and usually accounts for the energy resulting from the interface of two superconductors. The critical applied magnetic field for vortex nucleation is estimated in the London singular limit, and as a by-product, results concerning vortex-pinning and boundary conditions on the interface are obtained.

Mathematical analysis of the discharge of a laminar hot gas in a colder atmosphere.

Stanislav Antontsev, Jesús Ildefonso Díaz (2007)

RACSAM

We study the boundary layer approximation of the, already classical, mathematical model which describes the discharge of a laminar hot gas in a stagnant colder atmosphere of the same gas. We start by proving the existence and uniqueness of solutions of the nondegenerate problem under assumptions implying that the temperature T and the horizontal velocity u of the gas are strictly positive: T ≥ δ > 0 and u ≥ ε > 0 (here δ and ε are given as boundary conditions in the external atmosphere)....

Mathematical analysis of the stabilization of lamellar phases by a shear stress

V. Torri (2002)

ESAIM: Control, Optimisation and Calculus of Variations

We consider a 2D mathematical model describing the motion of a solution of surfactants submitted to a high shear stress in a Couette - Taylor system. We are interested in a stabilization process obtained thanks to the shear. We prove that, if the shear stress is large enough, there exists global in time solution for small initial data and that the solution of the linearized system (controlled by a nonconstant parameter) tends to 0 as t goes to infinity. This explains rigorously some experiments.

Mathematical and physical aspects of the initial value problem for a nonlocal model of heat propagation with finite speed

Jerzy A. Gawinecki, Agnieszka Gawinecka, Jarosław Łazuka, J. Rafa (2013)

Applicationes Mathematicae

Theories of heat predicting a finite speed of propagation of thermal signals have come into existence during the last 50 years. It is worth emphasizing that in contrast to the classical heat theory, these nonclassical theories involve a hyperbolic type heat equation and are based on experiments exhibiting the actual occurrence of wave-type heat transport (so called second sound). This paper presents a new system of equations describing a nonlocal model of heat propagation with finite speed in the...

Mathematical Homogenization in the Modelling of Digestion in the Small Intestine

Masoomeh Taghipoor, Guy Barles, Christine Georgelin, Jean-René Licois, Philippe Lescoat (2013)

MathematicS In Action

Digestion in the small intestine is the result of complex mechanical and biological phenomena which can be modelled at different scales. In a previous article, we introduced a system of ordinary differential equations for describing the transport and degradation-absorption processes during the digestion. The present article sustains this simplified model by showing that it can be seen as a macroscopic version of more realistic models including biological phenomena at lower scales. In other words,...

Mathematical modelling of cable stayed bridges: existence, uniqueness, continuous dependence on data, homogenization of cable systems

Josef Malík (2004)

Applications of Mathematics

A model of a cable stayed bridge is proposed. This model describes the behaviour of the center span, the part between pylons, hung on one row of cable stays. The existence, the uniqueness of a solution of a time independent problem and the continuous dependence on data are proved. The existence and the uniqueness of a solution of a linearized dynamic problem are proved. A homogenizing procedure making it possible to replace cables by a continuous system is proposed. A nonlinear dynamic problem connected...

Mathematical modelling of rock bolt systems. I

Josef Malík (1998)

Applications of Mathematics

The main goal of the paper is to give a variational formulation of the behaviour of bolt systems in rock mass. The problem arises in geomechanics where bolt systems are applied to reinforce underground openings by inserting steel bars or cables. After giving a variational formulation, we prove the existence and uniqueness and some other properties.

Mathematical modelling of rock bolt systems. II

Josef Malík (2000)

Applications of Mathematics

The main goal of the paper is to describe a reinforcement consisting of fully grouted bolts, which is applied to stabilizing underground openings and tunnels. After a variational formulation is given, the existence and uniqueness is proved. Some asymptotic results that make it possible to replace the real system with a continuous one more suitable for discretization are presented. Some other types of reinforcements and properties are studied.

Mathematical models of suspension bridges

Gabriela Tajčová (1997)

Applications of Mathematics

In this work we try to explain various mathematical models describing the dynamical behaviour of suspension bridges such as the Tacoma Narrows bridge. Our attention is concentrated on the derivation of these models, an interpretation of particular parameters and on a discussion of their advantages and disadvantages. Our work should be a starting point for a qualitative study of dynamical structures of this type and that is why we have a closer look at the models, which have not been studied in literature...

Mathematical study of an evolution problem describing the thermomechanical process in shape memory alloys

Pierluigi Colli (1991)

Atti della Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei. Classe di Scienze Fisiche, Matematiche e Naturali. Rendiconti Lincei. Matematica e Applicazioni

In this paper we prove existence, uniqueness, and continuous dependence for a one-dimensional time-dependent problem related to a thermo-mechanical model of structural phase transitions in solids. This model assumes the free energy depending on temperature, macroscopic deformation and also on the proportions of the phases. Here we neglect regularizing terms in the momentum balance equation and in the constitutive laws for the phase proportions.

Maximal regularity for second order non-autonomous Cauchy problems

Charles J. K. Batty, Ralph Chill, Sachi Srivastava (2008)

Studia Mathematica

We consider some non-autonomous second order Cauchy problems of the form ü + B(t)u̇ + A(t)u = f(t ∈ [0,T]), u(0) = u̇(0) = 0. We assume that the first order problem u̇ + B(t)u = f(t ∈ [0,T]), u(0) = 0, has L p -maximal regularity. Then we establish L p -maximal regularity of the second order problem in situations when the domains of B(t₁) and A(t₂) always coincide, or when A(t) = κB(t).
