On spectral continuity of positive elements

S. Mouton (2006)

Studia Mathematica

Let x be a positive element of an ordered Banach algebra. We prove a relationship between the spectra of x and of certain positive elements y for which either xy ≤ yx or yx ≤ xy. Furthermore, we show that the spectral radius is continuous at x, considered as an element of the set of all positive elements y ≥ x such that either xy ≤ yx or yx ≤ xy. We also show that the property ϱ(x + y) ≤ ϱ(x) + ϱ(y) of the spectral radius ϱ can be obtained for positive elements y which satisfy at least one of the...

On spectral properties of linear combinations of idempotents

Hong-Ke Du, Chun-Yan Deng, Mostafa Mbekhta, Vladimír Müller (2007)

Studia Mathematica

Let P,Q be two linear idempotents on a Banach space. We show that the closedness of the range and complementarity of the kernel (range) of linear combinations of P and Q are independent of the choice of coefficients. This generalizes known results and shows that many spectral properties of linear combinations do not depend on their coefficients.

On Spectrum and Riesz basis property for one-dimensional wave equation with Boltzmann damping∗

Bao-Zhu Guo, Guo-Dong Zhang (2012)

ESAIM: Control, Optimisation and Calculus of Variations

In this paper, we study the one-dimensional wave equation with Boltzmann damping. Two different Boltzmann integrals that represent the memory of materials are considered. The spectral properties for both cases are thoroughly analyzed. It is found that when the memory of system is counted from the infinity, the spectrum of system contains a left half complex plane, which is sharp contrast to the most results in elastic vibration systems that the vibrating dynamics can be considered from the vibration...

On square functions associated to sectorial operators

Christian Le Merdy (2004)

Bulletin de la Société Mathématique de France

We give new results on square functions x F = 0 F ( t A ) x 2 d t t 1 / 2 p associated to a sectorial operator A on L p for 1 < p < . Under the assumption that A is actually R -sectorial, we prove equivalences of the form K - 1 x G x F K x G for suitable functions F , G . We also show that A has a bounded H functional calculus with respect to . F . Then we apply our results to the study of conditions under which we have an estimate ( 0 | C e - t A ( x ) | 2 d t ) 1 / 2 q M x p , when - A generates a bounded semigroup e - t A on L p and C : D ( A ) L q is a linear mapping.

On strong generation of B(ℋ) by two commutative C*-algebras

R. Berntzen, A. Sołtysiak (1997)

Studia Mathematica

The algebra B(ℋ) of all bounded operators on a Hilbert space ℋ is generated in the strong operator topology by a single one-dimensional projection and a family of commuting unitary operators with cardinality not exceeding dim ℋ. This answers Problem 8 posed by W. Żelazko in [6].

On strongly stable approximations.

F. Arandiga, V. Caselles (1994)

Revista Matemática de la Universidad Complutense de Madrid

In this paper we prove that the convergence of (T - Tn)Tn-k to zero in operator norm (plus some technical conditions) is a sufficient condition for Tn to be a strongly stable approximation to T, thus extending some previous results existing in the literature.
