We present the letters sent by Wolfgang Doeblin to Bohuslav Hostinský between 1936 and 1938. They concern some aspects of the general theory of Markov chains and the solutions of the Chapman-Kolmogorov equation that Doeblin was then establishing for his PhD thesis.
We trace the beginning of symbolic dynamics-the study of the shift dynamical system-as it arose from the use of coding to study recurrence and transitivity of geodesics. Je zvykem, že si připomínáme výročí narození či úmrtí významných osobností v době související s naším užíváním dekadické soustavy. Loni uplynulo od Neugebauerova narození 120 let a letos uplynulo 30 let od jeho úmrtí. Přitom ani matematici si často neuvědomují, za co vše mu vděčíme, což je jeden z důvodů pro napsání tohoto článku.
Na základě studia archivních materiálů dochovaných v České republice, na Slovensku, v Německu a v Maďarsku připomeneme zajímavé a u nás skoro zapomenuté osudy Otty Vargy, jehož kariéra se zrodila v meziválečném čase na Německé univerzitě v Praze a vyvrcholila po druhé světové válce v Maďarsku.
