In this paper, we study the one-dimensional wave equation with Boltzmann damping. Two different Boltzmann integrals that represent the memory of materials are considered. The spectral properties for both cases are thoroughly analyzed. It is found that when the memory of system is counted from the infinity, the spectrum of system contains a left half complex plane, which is sharp contrast to the most results in elastic vibration systems that the vibrating dynamics can be considered from the vibration...

There are a number of spectra studied in the literature which do not fit into the axiomatic theory of Żelazko. This paper is an attempt to give an axiomatic theory for these spectra, which, apart from the usual types of spectra, like one-sided, approximate point or essential spectra, include also the local spectra, the Browder spectrum and various versions of the Apostol spectrum (studied under various names, e.g. regular, semiregular or essentially semiregular).

Let $T$ be an operator acting on a Banach space $X$ . We show that between extensions of $T$ to some Banach space $Y \supset X$ which do not increase the defect spectrum (or the spectrum) it is possible to find an extension with the minimal possible defect spectrum.

Let A denote a complex unital Banach algebra. We characterize properties such as boundedness, relative compactness, and convergence of the sequence ${x^{n} (x - 1)}_{n \in ℕ}$ for an arbitrary x ∈ A, using σ(x) and resolvent conditions. Under these circumstances, we investigate elements in the peripheral spectrum, and give further conclusions, also involving the behaviour of ${x^{n}}_{n \in ℕ}$ and ${1 / n \sum_{k = 0}^{n - 1} x^{k}}_{n \in ℕ}$ .

We study the existence of principal eigenvalues for differential operators of second order which are not necessarily in divergence form. We obtain results concerning multiplicity of principal eigenvalues in both the variational and the general case. Our approach uses systematically the Krein-Rutman theorem and fixed point arguments for the inverse of the spectral radius of some associated problems. We also use a variational characterization for both the self-adjoint and the general case.
