Gradient estimates for inverse curvature flows in hyperbolic space

Julian Scheuer (2015)

Geometric Flows

We prove gradient estimates for hypersurfaces in the hyperbolic space Hn+1, expanding by negative powers of a certain class of homogeneous curvature functions F. We obtain optimal gradient estimates for hypersurfaces evolving by certain powers p > 1 of F-1 and smooth convergence of the properly rescaled hypersurfaces. In particular, the full convergence result holds for the inverse Gauss curvature flow of surfaces without any further pinching condition besides convexity of the initial hypersurface....

Hermitian curvature flow

Jeffrey Streets, Gang Tian (2011)

Journal of the European Mathematical Society

We define a functional for Hermitian metrics using the curvature of the Chern connection. The Euler–Lagrange equation for this functional is an elliptic equation for Hermitian metrics. Solutions to this equation are related to Kähler–Einstein metrics, and are automatically Kähler–Einstein under certain conditions. Given this, a natural parabolic flow equation arises. We prove short time existence and regularity results for this flow, as well as stability for the flow near Kähler–Einstein metrics...

How to produce a Ricci flow via Cheeger–Gromoll exhaustion

Esther Cabezas-Rivas, Burkhard Wilking (2015)

Journal of the European Mathematical Society

We prove short time existence for the Ricci flow on open manifolds of non-negative complex sectional curvature without requiring upper curvature bounds. By considering the doubling of convex sets contained in a Cheeger–Gromoll convex exhaustion and solving the singular initial value problem for the Ricci flow on these closed manifolds, we obtain a sequence of closed solutions of the Ricci flow with non-negative complex sectional curvature which subconverge to a Ricci flow on the open manifold. Furthermore,...

How to unify the total/local-length-constraints of the gradient flow for the bending energy of plane curves

Yuki Miyamoto, Takeyuki Nagasawa, Fumito Suto (2009)

Kybernetika

The gradient flow of bending energy for plane curve is studied. The flow is considered under two kinds of constraints; one is under the area and total-length constraints; the other is under the area and local-length constraints. The fundamental results (the local existence and uniqueness) were obtained independently by Kurihara and the second author for the former one; by Okabe for the later one. For the former one the global existence was shown for any smooth initial curves, but the asymptotic...

Integral formula for secantoptics and its application

Witold Mozgawa, Magdalena Skrzypiec (2012)

Annales UMCS, Mathematica

Some properties of secantoptics of ovals defined by Skrzypiec in 2008 were proved by Mozgawa and Skrzypiec in 2009. In this paper we generalize to this case results obtained by Cieślak, Miernowski and Mozgawa in 1996 and derive an integral formula for an annulus bounded by a given oval and its secantoptic. We describe the change of the area bounded by a secantoptic and find the differential equation for this function. We finish with some examples illustrating the above results.

Integral formulas related to wave fronts

Sergeĭ Anisov (1999)

Banach Center Publications

In the first section of the paper we study some properties of oriented volumes of wave fronts propagating in spaces of constant curvature. In the second section, we generalize to an arbitrary isometric action of a Lie group on a Riemannian manifold the following principle: an extra pression inside of a ball does not move it.

Introduction to mean curvature flow

Roberta Alessandroni (2008/2009)

Séminaire de théorie spectrale et géométrie

This is a short overview on the most classical results on mean curvature flow as a flow of smooth hypersurfaces. First of all we define the mean curvature flow as a quasilinear parabolic equation and give some easy examples of evolution. Then we consider the M.C.F. on convex surfaces and sketch the proof of the convergence to a round point. Some interesting results on the M.C.F. for entire graphs are also mentioned. In particular when we consider the case of dimension one, we can compute the equation...

Local gradient estimates of p -harmonic functions, 1 / H -flow, and an entropy formula

Brett Kotschwar, Lei Ni (2009)

Annales scientifiques de l'École Normale Supérieure

In the first part of this paper, we prove local interior and boundary gradient estimates for p -harmonic functions on general Riemannian manifolds. With these estimates, following the strategy in recent work of R. Moser, we prove an existence theorem for weak solutions to the level set formulation of the 1 / H (inverse mean curvature) flow for hypersurfaces in ambient manifolds satisfying a sharp volume growth assumption. In the second part of this paper, we consider two parabolic analogues of the p -harmonic...

Metric Ricci Curvature and Flow for PL Manifolds

Emil Saucan (2013)

Actes des rencontres du CIRM

We summarize here the main ideas and results of our papers [28], [14], as presented at the 2013 CIRM Meeting on Discrete curvature and we augment these by bringing up an application of one of our main results, namely to solving a problem regarding cube complexes.

Minimizing movements for dislocation dynamics with a mean curvature term

Nicolas Forcadel, Aurélien Monteillet (2009)

ESAIM: Control, Optimisation and Calculus of Variations

We prove existence of minimizing movements for the dislocation dynamics evolution law of a propagating front, in which the normal velocity of the front is the sum of a non-local term and a mean curvature term. We prove that any such minimizing movement is a weak solution of this evolution law, in a sense related to viscosity solutions of the corresponding level-set equation. We also prove the consistency of this approach, by showing that any minimizing movement coincides with the smooth evolution...

Motion by curvature of planar networks

Carlo Mantegazza, Matteo Novaga, Vincenzo Maria Tortorelli (2004)

Annali della Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa - Classe di Scienze

We consider the motion by curvature of a network of smooth curves with multiple junctions in the plane, that is, the geometric gradient flow associated to the length functional. Such a flow represents the evolution of a two–dimensional multiphase system where the energy is simply the sum of the lengths of the interfaces, in particular it is a possible model for the growth of grain boundaries. Moreover, the motion of these networks of curves is the simplest example of curvature flow for sets which...

Non-Trapping sets and Huygens Principle

Dario Benedetto, Emanuele Caglioti, Roberto Libero (2010)

ESAIM: Mathematical Modelling and Numerical Analysis

We consider the evolution of a set Λ 2 according to the Huygens principle: i.e. the domain at time t>0, Λt, is the set of the points whose distance from Λ is lower than t. We give some general results for this evolution, with particular care given to the behavior of the perimeter of the evoluted set as a function of time. We define a class of sets (non-trapping sets) for which the perimeter is a continuous function of t, and we give an algorithm to approximate the evolution. Finally we restrict...

On Perelman’s functional with curvature corrections

Rami Ahmad El-Nabulsi (2012)

Annales UMCS, Mathematica

In recent ten years, there has been much concentration and increased research activities on Hamilton’s Ricci flow evolving on a Riemannian metric and Perelman’s functional. In this paper, we extend Perelman’s functional approach to include logarithmic curvature corrections induced by quantum effects. Many interesting consequences are revealed.

On the finiteness of the fundamental group of a compact shrinking Ricci soliton

Zhenlei Zhang (2007)

Colloquium Mathematicae

Myers's classical theorem says that a compact Riemannian manifold with positive Ricci curvature has finite fundamental group. Using Ambrose's compactness criterion or J. Lott's results, M. Fernández-López and E. García-Río showed that the finiteness of the fundamental group remains valid for a compact shrinking Ricci soliton. We give a self-contained proof of this fact by estimating the lengths of shortest geodesic loops in each homotopy class.
