On closed subgroups of the group of homeomorphisms of a manifold

Let M be a triangulable compact manifold. We prove that, among closed subgroups of Homeo 0 ( M ) (the identity component of the group of homeomorphisms of M ), the subgroup consisting of volume preserving elements is maximal.

On conformally flat Lorentz parabolic manifolds

We introduce conformally flat Fefferman-Lorentz manifold of parabolic type as a special class of Lorentz parabolic manifolds. It is a smooth (2n+2)-manifold locally modeled on (Û(n+1, 1), S 2n+1,1). As the terminology suggests, when a Fefferman-Lorentz manifold M is conformally flat, M is a Fefferman-Lorentz manifold of parabolic type. We shall discuss which compact manifolds occur as a conformally flat Fefferman-Lorentz manifold of parabolic type.

On countable dense and strong n-homogeneity

We prove that if a space X is countable dense homogeneous and no set of size n-1 separates it, then X is strongly n-homogeneous. Our main result is the construction of an example of a Polish space X that is strongly n-homogeneous for every n, but not countable dense homogeneous.

On finite groups acting on a connected sum of 3-manifolds S² × S¹

Let H g denote the closed 3-manifold obtained as the connected sum of g copies of S² × S¹, with free fundamental group of rank g. We prove that, for a finite group G acting on H g which induces a faithful action on the fundamental group, there is an upper bound for the order of G which is quadratic in g, but there does not exist a linear bound in g. We conjecture that every finite group G acting on a contractible CW-complex X of dimension 2 has at least one fixed point. We prove this in the case where G is solvable, and under this additional hypothesis, the result holds for X acyclic.

We consider finite groups which admit a faithful, smooth action on an acyclic manifold of dimension three, four or five (e.g. Euclidean space).
