A result on the orders of the reductions of an element of the group of S-units of a number field is obtained by investigating three height functions for groups of S-units of number fields which are analogous to local, global and canonical height functions for elliptic curves.
We compare general inequalities between invariants of number fields and invariants of elliptic curves over number fields. On the number field side, we remark that there is only a finite number of non-CM number fields with bounded regulator. On the elliptic curve side, assuming the height conjecture of Lang and Silverman, we obtain a Northcott property for the regulator on the set of elliptic curves with dense rational points over a number field. This amounts to say that the arithmetic of CM fields...
We present bounds for the degree and the height of the polynomials arising in some problems in effective algebraic geometry including the implicitization of rational maps and the effective Nullstellensatz over a variety. Our treatment is based on arithmetic intersection theory in products of projective spaces and extends to the arithmetic setting constructions and results due to Jelonek. A key role is played by the notion of canonical mixed height of a multiprojective variety. We study this notion...
Consider an arbitrary algebraic curve defined over the field of all algebraic numbers and sitting in a multiplicative commutative algebraic group. In an earlier article from 1999 bearing almost the same title, we studied the intersection of the curve and the union of all algebraic subgroups of some fixed codimension. With codimension one the resulting set has bounded height properties, and with codimension two it has finiteness properties. The main aim of the present work is to make a start on such...
We prove that if a curve of a nonisotrivial family of abelian varieties over a curve contains infinitely many isogeny orbits of a finitely generated subgroup of a simple abelian variety, then it is either torsion or contained in a fiber. This result fits into the context of the Zilber-Pink conjecture. Moreover, by using the polyhedral reduction theory we give a new proof of a result of Bertrand.
For , we establish Lang’s conjecture on a lower bound for the canonical height of nontorsion points along with upper and lower bounds for the difference between the canonical and logarithmic heights. These results are either best possible or within a small constant of the best possible lower bounds.
A number of authors have proven explicit versions of Lehmer’s conjecture for polynomials whose coefficients are all congruent to modulo . We prove a similar result for polynomials that are divisible in by a polynomial of the form for some . We also formulate and prove an analogous statement for elliptic curves.
Classical results of Weil, Néron and Tate are generalized to local heights of subvarieties with respect to hermitian pseudo-divisors. The local heights are well-defined if the intersection of supports is empty. In the archimedean case, the metrics are hermitian and the local heights are defined by a refined version of the -product of Gillet-Soulé developped on compact varieties without assuming regularity. In the non-archimedean case, the local heights are intersection numbers using methods from...
