In the present paper the author discusses certain multiple integrals $I(u)$ of the calculus of variations satisfying convexity conditions, and no growth property, and the corresponding Serrin integrals $\Im (u)$, to which the existence theorems in [3,4,5] do not apply. However, in the present paper, the integrals $I(u)$ and $\Im (u)$ are reduced to simpler form $H(v)$ and $\mathscr{H}(v)$ to which the existence theorems above apply. We introduce a notion of a function of finite fractional variation and characterize such functions together with their weak $\sigma$-additive fractional derivatives. Next, we use these functions to study differential equations of fractional order, containing a $\sigma$-additive term—we prove existence and uniqueness of a solution as well as derive a Cauchy formula for the solution. We apply these results to impulsive equations, i.e. equations containing the Dirac measures.

Boundary value problems for generalized linear differential equations and the corresponding controllability problems are dealt with. Let ${𝒜}_{\beta }$ be the Beurling algebra with weight $(1+|n|{)}^{\beta }$ on the unit circle $𝕋$ and, for a closed set $E\subseteq 𝕋$, let $J_{{𝒜}_{\beta }}\left(E\right)=\{f\in {𝒜}_{\beta }:f=0\text{on}\text{a}\text{neighbourhood}\text{of}E\}$. We prove that, for $\beta \>\frac{1}{2}$, there exists a closed set $E\subseteq 𝕋$ of measure zero such that the quotient algebra ${𝒜}_{\beta }/\overline{J_{{𝒜}_{\beta }}\left(E\right)}$ is not generated by its idempotents, thus contrasting a result of Zouakia. Furthermore, for the Lipschitz algebras ${\lambda }_{\gamma }$ and the algebra $𝒜𝒞$ of absolutely continuous functions on $𝕋$, we characterize the closed sets $E\subseteq 𝕋$ for which the restriction algebras ${\lambda }_{\gamma }\left(E\right)$ and $𝒜𝒞\left(E\right)$ are generated by their idempotents.

Theorems stating sufficient conditions for the inequivalence of the d-variate Haar wavelet system and another wavelet system in the spaces $L₁\left({ℝ}^d\right)$ and $BV\left({ℝ}^d\right)$ are proved. These results are used to show that the Strömberg wavelet system and the system of continuous Daubechies wavelets with minimal supports are not equivalent to the Haar system in these spaces. A theorem stating that some systems of smooth Daubechies wavelets are not equivalent to the Haar system in $L₁\left({ℝ}^d\right)$ is also shown.

We study the integrability of Banach valued strongly measurable functions defined on $[0,1]$. In case of functions $f$ given by ${\sum }_{n=1}^{\infty }{x}_n{\chi }_{E_n}$, where $x_n$ belong to a Banach space and the sets $E_n$ are Lebesgue measurable and pairwise disjoint subsets of $[0,1]$, there are well known characterizations for the Bochner and for the Pettis integrability of $f$ (cf Musial (1991)). In this paper we give some conditions for the Kurzweil-Henstock and the Kurzweil-Henstock-Pettis integrability of such functions.

Given a modulus of continuity $\omega$ and $q\in [1,\infty [$ then $H_q^{\omega }$ denotes the space of all functions $f$ with the period $1$ on $ℝ$ that are locally integrable in power $q$ and whose integral modulus of continuity of power $q$ (see(1)) is majorized by a multiple of $\omega$. The moduli of continuity $\omega$ are characterized for which $H_q^{\omega }$ contains “many” functions with infinite “essential” variation on an interval of length $1$.

We present here our most recent results ([1def]) about the definition of non-linear Weiertrass-type integrals over BV varieties, possibly discontinuous and not necessarily Sobolev's.
