Modeling repulsive forces on fibres via knot energies

Simon Blatt, Philipp Reiter (2014)

Molecular Based Mathematical Biology

Modeling of repulsive forces is essential to the understanding of certain bio-physical processes, especially for the motion of DNA molecules. These kinds of phenomena seem to be driven by some sort of “energy” which especially prevents the molecules from strongly bending and forming self-intersections. Inspired by a physical toy model, numerous functionals have been defined during the past twenty-five years that aim at modeling self-avoidance. The general idea is to produce “detangled” curves having...

Modulation invariant and multilinear singular integral operators

Michael Christ (2005/2006)

Séminaire Bourbaki

In a series of papers beginning in the late 1990s, Michael Lacey and Christoph Thiele have resolved a longstanding conjecture of Calderón regarding certain very singular integral operators, given a transparent proof of Carleson’s theorem on the almost everywhere convergence of Fourier series, and initiated a slew of further developments. The hallmarks of these problems are multilinearity as opposed to mere linearity, and especially modulation symmetry. By modulation is meant multiplication by characters...

Multidimensional analogue of the van der Corput-Visser inequality and its application to the estimation of the Bohr radius

L. Aizenberg, E. Liflyand, A. Vidras (2003)

Annales Polonici Mathematici

We present a multidimensional analogue of an inequality by van der Corput-Visser concerning the coefficients of a real trigonometric polynomial. As an application, we obtain an improved estimate from below of the Bohr radius for the hypercone 𝓓₁ⁿ = {z ∈ ℂⁿ: |z₁|+. .. +|zₙ| < 1} when 3 ≤ n ≤ 10.

Multi-dimensional Fejér summability and local Hardy spaces

Ferenc Weisz (2009)

Studia Mathematica

It is proved that the multi-dimensional maximal Fejér operator defined in a cone is bounded from the amalgam Hardy space W ( h p , ) to W ( L p , ) . This implies the almost everywhere convergence of the Fejér means in a cone for all f W ( L , ) , which is larger than L ( d ) .

Multifractal analysis of the divergence of Fourier series

Frédéric Bayart, Yanick Heurteaux (2012)

Annales scientifiques de l'École Normale Supérieure

A famous theorem of Carleson says that, given any function f L p ( 𝕋 ) , p ( 1 , + ) , its Fourier series ( S n f ( x ) ) converges for almost every x 𝕋 . Beside this property, the series may diverge at some point, without exceeding O ( n 1 / p ) . We define the divergence index at  x as the infimum of the positive real numbers β such that S n f ( x ) = O ( n β ) and we are interested in the size of the exceptional sets E β , namely the sets of  x 𝕋 with divergence index equal to  β . We show that quasi-all functions in  L p ( 𝕋 ) have a multifractal behavior with respect to this definition....

Multiple conjugate functions and multiplicative Lipschitz classes

Ferenc Móricz (2009)

Colloquium Mathematicae

We extend the classical theorems of I. I. Privalov and A. Zygmund from single to multiple conjugate functions in terms of the multiplicative modulus of continuity. A remarkable corollary is that if a function f belongs to the multiplicative Lipschitz class L i p ( α , . . . , α N ) for some 0 < α , . . . , α N < 1 and its marginal functions satisfy f ( · , x , . . . , x N ) L i p β , . . . , f ( x , . . . , x N - 1 , · ) L i p β N for some 0 < β , . . . , β N < 1 uniformly in the indicated variables x l , 1 ≤ l ≤ N, then f ̃ ( η , . . . , η N ) L i p ( α , . . . , α N ) for each choice of ( η , . . . , η N ) with η l = 0 or 1 for 1 ≤ l ≤ N.

Multipliers of Laplace transform type for Laguerre and Hermite expansions

Pablo L. De Nápoli, Irene Drelichman, Ricardo G. Durán (2011)

Studia Mathematica

We present a new criterion for the weighted L p - L q boundedness of multiplier operators for Laguerre and Hermite expansions that arise from a Laplace-Stieltjes transform. As a special case, we recover known results on weighted estimates for Laguerre and Hermite fractional integrals with a unified and simpler approach.

Multipliers on a Hilbert Space of Functions on R

Petkova, Violeta (2009)

Serdica Mathematical Journal

2000 Mathematics Subject Classification: 42A45.For a Hilbert space H ⊂ L1loc(R) of functions on R we obtain a representation theorem for the multipliers M commuting with the shift operator S. This generalizes the classical result for multipliers in L2(R) as well as our previous result for multipliers in weighted space L2ω(R). Moreover, we obtain a description of the spectrum of S.

Multivariate smooth interpolation that employs polyharmonic functions

Segeth, Karel (2019)

Programs and Algorithms of Numerical Mathematics

We study the problem of construction of the smooth interpolation formula presented as the minimizer of suitable functionals subject to interpolation constraints. We present a procedure for determining the interpolation formula that in a natural way leads to a linear combination of polyharmonic splines complemented with lower order polynomial terms. In general, such formulae can be very useful e.g. in geographic information systems or computer aided geometric design. A simple computational example...

Necessary conditions for the L p -convergence ( 0 < p < 1 ) of single and double trigonometric series

Xhevat Z. Krasniqi, Péter Kórus, Ferenc Móricz (2014)

Mathematica Bohemica

We give necessary conditions in terms of the coefficients for the convergence of a double trigonometric series in the L p -metric, where 0 < p < 1 . The results and their proofs have been motivated by the recent papers of A. S. Belov (2008) and F. Móricz (2010). Our basic tools in the proofs are the Hardy-Littlewood inequality for functions in H p and the Bernstein-Zygmund inequalities for the derivatives of trigonometric polynomials and their conjugates in the L p -metric, where 0 < p < 1 .
