We prove a Margulis’ Lemma à la Besson-Courtois-Gallot, for manifolds whose fundamental group is a nontrivial free product , without 2-torsion. Moreover, if is torsion-free we give a lower bound for the homotopy systole in terms of upper bounds on the diameter and the volume-entropy. We also provide examples and counterexamples showing the optimality of our assumption. Finally we give two applications of this result: a finiteness theorem and a volume estimate for reducible manifolds.
In this paper we consider compact, Riemannian manifolds M1, M2 each equipped with a oneparameter family of metrics g1(t), g2(t) satisfying the Ricci flow equation. Adopting the characterization of super-solutions to the Ricci flow developed by McCann-Topping, we define a super Ricci flow for a family of distance metrics defined on the disjoint union M1 ⊔ M2. We prove Obata’s rigidity theorem for metric measure spaces that satisfy a Riemannian curvaturedimension condition. Additionally,we show that a lower bound K for the generalizedHessian of a sufficiently regular function u holds if and only if u is K-convex. A corollary is also a rigidity result for higher order eigenvalues.
The following results are proved: The center of any finite index subgroup of an irreducible, infinite, nonaffine Coxeter group is trivial; Any finite index subgroup of an irreducible, infinite, nonaffine Coxeter group cannot be expressed as a product of two nontrivial subgroups. These two theorems imply a unique decomposition theorem for a class of Coxeter groups. In this paper we survey some recent results on rank one symmetric space.
We investigate the geometry at infinity of the so-called “gravitational instantons”, i.e. asymptotically flat hyperkähler four-manifolds, in relation with their volume growth. In particular, we prove that gravitational instantons with cubic volume growth are ALF, namely asymptotic to a circle fibration over a Euclidean three-space, with fibers of asymptotically constant length.
We explore the interior geometry of the CAT(0) spaces , constructed by Croke and Kleiner [Topology 39 (2000)]. In particular, we describe a diffraction effect experienced by the family of geodesic rays that emanate from a basepoint and pass through a certain singular point called a triple point, and we describe the shadow this family casts on the boundary. This diffraction effect is codified in the Transformation Rules stated in Section 3 of this paper. The Transformation Rules have various applications....
We give a new perspective on the homological characterizations of amenability given by Johnson & Ringrose in the context of bounded cohomology and by Block & Weinberger in the context of uniformly finite homology. We examine the interaction between their theories and explain the relationship between these characterizations. We apply these ideas to give a new proof of non-vanishing for the bounded cohomology of a free group.
