Galerkin approximation with proper orthogonal decomposition : new error estimates and illustrative examples

Dominique Chapelle, Asven Gariah, Jacques Sainte-Marie (2012)

ESAIM: Mathematical Modelling and Numerical Analysis - Modélisation Mathématique et Analyse Numérique

We propose a numerical analysis of proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) model reductions in which a priori error estimates are expressed in terms of the projection errors that are controlled in the construction of POD bases. These error estimates are derived for generic parabolic evolution PDEs, including with non-linear Lipschitz right-hand sides, and for wave-like equations. A specific projection continuity norm appears in the estimates and – whereas a general uniform continuity bound seems out...

Galerkin approximations for the linear parabolic equation with the third boundary condition

István Faragó, Sergey Korotov, Pekka Neittaanmäki (2003)

Applications of Mathematics

We solve a linear parabolic equation in d , d 1 , with the third nonhomogeneous boundary condition using the finite element method for discretization in space, and the θ -method for discretization in time. The convergence of both, the semidiscrete approximations and the fully discretized ones, is analysed. The proofs are based on a generalization of the idea of the elliptic projection. The rate of convergence is derived also for variable time step-sizes.

Galerkin time-stepping methods for nonlinear parabolic equations

Georgios Akrivis, Charalambos Makridakis (2004)

ESAIM: Mathematical Modelling and Numerical Analysis - Modélisation Mathématique et Analyse Numérique

We consider discontinuous as well as continuous Galerkin methods for the time discretization of a class of nonlinear parabolic equations. We show existence and local uniqueness and derive optimal order optimal regularity a priori error estimates. We establish the results in an abstract Hilbert space setting and apply them to a quasilinear parabolic equation.

Gaussian curvature based tangential redistribution of points on evolving surfaces

Medľa, Matej, Mikula, Karol (2017)

Proceedings of Equadiff 14

There exist two main methods for computing a surface evolution, level-set method and Lagrangian method. Redistribution of points is a crucial element in a Lagrangian approach. In this paper we present a point redistribution that compress quads in the areas with a high Gaussian curvature. Numerical method is presented for a mean curvature flow of a surface approximated by quads.

Generalized Harten formalism and longitudinal variation diminishing schemes for linear advection on arbitrary grids

Bruno Després, Frédéric Lagoutière (2001)

ESAIM: Mathematical Modelling and Numerical Analysis - Modélisation Mathématique et Analyse Numérique

We study a family of non linear schemes for the numerical solution of linear advection on arbitrary grids in several space dimension. A proof of weak convergence of the family of schemes is given, based on a new Longitudinal Variation Diminishing (LVD) estimate. This estimate is a multidimensional equivalent to the well-known TVD estimate in one dimension. The proof uses a corollary of the Perron-Frobenius theorem applied to a generalized Harten formalism.

Generalized method of lines for first order partial functional differential equations

W. Czernous (2006)

Annales Polonici Mathematici

Classical solutions of initial boundary value problems are approximated by solutions of associated differential difference problems. A method of lines for an unknown function for the original problem and for its partial derivatives with respect to spatial variables is constructed. A complete convergence analysis for the method is given. A stability result is proved by using differential inequalities with nonlinear estimates of the Perron type for the given operators. A discretization...

Generic implementation of finite element methods in the Distributed and Unified Numerics Environment (DUNE)

Peter Bastian, Felix Heimann, Sven Marnach (2010)

Kybernetika

In this paper we describe PDELab, an extensible C++ template library for finite element methods based on the Distributed and Unified Numerics Environment (Dune). PDELab considerably simplifies the implementation of discretization schemes for systems of partial differential equations by setting up global functions and operators from a simple element-local description. A general concept for incorporation of constraints eases the implementation of essential boundary conditions, hanging nodes and varying...

Genuinely multi-dimensional non-dissipative finite-volume schemes for transport

Bruno Després, Frédéric Lagoutière (2007)

International Journal of Applied Mathematics and Computer Science

We develop a new multidimensional finite-volume algorithm for transport equations. This algorithm is both stable and non-dissipative. It is based on a reconstruction of the discrete solution inside each cell at every time step. The proposed reconstruction, which is genuinely multidimensional, allows recovering sharp profiles in both the direction of the transport velocity and the transverse direction. It constitutes an extension of the one-dimensional reconstructions analyzed in (Lagoutière, 2005;...

Geometrical aspects of exact boundary controllability for the wave equation - a numerical study

M. Asch, G. Lebeau (2010)

ESAIM: Control, Optimisation and Calculus of Variations

This essentially numerical study, sets out to investigate various geometrical properties of exact boundary controllability of the wave equation when the control is applied on a part of the boundary. Relationships between the geometry of the domain, the geometry of the controlled boundary, the time needed to control and the energy of the control are dealt with. A new norm of the control and an energetic cost factor are introduced. These quantities enable a detailed appraisal of the numerical solutions...
