Scattering of small solutions of a symmetric regularized-long-wave equation

Sevdzhan Hakkaev (2004)

Applicationes Mathematicae

We study the decay in time of solutions of a symmetric regularized-long-wave equation and we show that under some restriction on the form of nonlinearity, the solutions of the nonlinear equation have the same long time behavior as those of the linear equation. This behavior allows us to establish a nonlinear scattering result for small perturbations.

Shear flows of a new class of power-law fluids

Christiaan Le Roux, Kumbakonam R. Rajagopal (2013)

Applications of Mathematics

We consider the flow of a class of incompressible fluids which are constitutively defined by the symmetric part of the velocity gradient being a function, which can be non-monotone, of the deviator of the stress tensor. These models are generalizations of the stress power-law models introduced and studied by J. Málek, V. Průša, K. R. Rajagopal: Generalizations of the Navier-Stokes fluid from a new perspective. Int. J. Eng. Sci. 48 (2010), 1907–1924. We discuss a potential application of the new...

Simplified models of quantum fluids in nuclear physics

Bernard Ducomet (2001)

Mathematica Bohemica

We revisit a hydrodynamical model, derived by Wong from Time-Dependent-Hartree-Fock approximation, to obtain a simplified version of nuclear matter. We obtain well-posed problems of Navier-Stokes-Poisson-Yukawa type, with some unusual features due to quantum aspects, for which one can prove local existence. In the case of a one-dimensional nuclear slab, we can prove a result of global existence, by using a formal analogy with some model of nonlinear "viscoelastic" rods.

Smoothness of the motion of a rigid body immersed in an incompressible perfect fluid

Olivier Glass, Franck Sueur, Takéo Takahashi (2012)

Annales scientifiques de l'École Normale Supérieure

We consider the motion of a rigid body immersed in an incompressible perfect fluid which occupies a three-dimensional bounded domain. For such a system the Cauchy problem is well-posed locally in time if the initial velocity of the fluid is in the Hölder space C 1 , r . In this paper we prove that the smoothness of the motion of the rigid body may be only limited by the smoothness of the boundaries (of the body and of the domain). In particular for analytic boundaries the motion of the rigid body is analytic...

Smoothness properties of solutions to the nonlinear Stokes problem with nonautonomous potentials

Dominic Breit (2013)

Commentationes Mathematicae Universitatis Carolinae

We discuss regularity results concerning local minimizers u : n Ω n of variational integrals like Ω { F ( · , ε ( w ) ) - f · w } d x defined on energy classes of solenoidal fields. For the potential F we assume a ( p , q ) -elliptic growth condition. In the situation without x -dependence it is known that minimizers are of class C 1 , α on an open subset Ω 0 of Ω with full measure if q < p n + 2 n (for n = 2 we have Ω 0 = Ω ). In this article we extend this to the case of nonautonomous integrands. Of course our result extends to weak solutions of the corresponding nonlinear...

Solutions of a nonhyperbolic pair of balance laws

Michael Sever (2005)

ESAIM: Mathematical Modelling and Numerical Analysis - Modélisation Mathématique et Analyse Numérique

We describe a constructive algorithm for obtaining smooth solutions of a nonlinear, nonhyperbolic pair of balance laws modeling incompressible two-phase flow in one space dimension and time. Solutions are found as stationary solutions of a related hyperbolic system, based on the introduction of an artificial time variable. As may be expected for such nonhyperbolic systems, in general the solutions obtained do not satisfy both components of the given initial data. This deficiency may be overcome,...

Solvability Conditions for a Linearized Cahn-Hilliard Equation of Sixth Order

V. Vougalter, V. Volpert (2012)

Mathematical Modelling of Natural Phenomena

We obtain solvability conditions in H6(ℝ3) for a sixth order partial differential equation which is the linearized Cahn-Hilliard problem using the results derived for a Schrödinger type operator without Fredholm property in our preceding article [18].
