Le equazioni di evoluzione dei continui ferromagnetici

P. Podio-Guidugli (2001)

Bollettino dell'Unione Matematica Italiana

This expository paper is meant to be a faithful account the invited lecture I gave in Naples on September 14, 1999, during the 16th Congress of U.M.I., the Italian Mathematical Union. In Section 2, I consider the Gilbert equation, the parabolic equation that rules the evolution of the magnetization vector in a rigid ferromagnet. Among the issues I here discuss are the relations of the Gilbert equation to the harmonic map equation and its heat flow, the existence of global-in-time weak solutions,...

Linear scheme for finite element solution of nonlinear parabolic-elliptic problems with nonhomogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition

Dana Říhová-Škabrahová (2001)

Applications of Mathematics

The computation of nonlinear quasistationary two-dimensional magnetic fields leads to a nonlinear second order parabolic-elliptic initial-boundary value problem. Such a problem with a nonhomogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition on a part Γ 1 of the boundary is studied in this paper. The problem is discretized in space by the finite element method with linear functions on triangular elements and in time by the implicit-explicit method (the left-hand side by the implicit Euler method and the right-hand...

Magnetization switching on small ferromagnetic ellipsoidal samples

François Alouges, Karine Beauchard (2009)

ESAIM: Control, Optimisation and Calculus of Variations

The study of small magnetic particles has become a very important topic, in particular for the development of technological devices such as those used for magnetic recording. In this field, switching the magnetization inside the magnetic sample is of particular relevance. We here investigate mathematically this problem by considering the full partial differential model of Landau-Lifschitz equations triggered by a uniform (in space) external magnetic field.

Mathematical and numerical studies of non linear ferromagnetic materials

Patrick Joly, Olivier Vacus (2010)

ESAIM: Mathematical Modelling and Numerical Analysis

In this paper we are interested in the numerical modeling of absorbing ferromagnetic materials obeying the non-linear Landau-Lifchitz-Gilbert law with respect to the propagation and scattering of electromagnetic waves. In this work we consider the 1D problem. We first show that the corresponding Cauchy problem has a unique global solution. We then derive a numerical scheme based on an appropriate modification of Yee's scheme, that we show to preserve some important properties of the continuous...

Mathematical models for laser-plasma interaction

Rémi Sentis (2005)

ESAIM: Mathematical Modelling and Numerical Analysis - Modélisation Mathématique et Analyse Numérique

We address here mathematical models related to the Laser-Plasma Interaction. After a simplified introduction to the physical background concerning the modelling of the laser propagation and its interaction with a plasma, we recall some classical results about the geometrical optics in plasmas. Then we deal with the well known paraxial approximation of the solution of the Maxwell equation; we state a coupling model between the plasma hydrodynamics and the laser propagation. Lastly, we consider the...

Mixed discontinuous Galerkin approximation of the Maxwell operator : the indefinite case

Paul Houston, Ilaria Perugia, Anna Schneebeli, Dominik Schötzau (2005)

ESAIM: Mathematical Modelling and Numerical Analysis - Modélisation Mathématique et Analyse Numérique

We present and analyze an interior penalty method for the numerical discretization of the indefinite time-harmonic Maxwell equations in mixed form. The method is based on the mixed discretization of the curl-curl operator developed in [Houston et al., J. Sci. Comp. 22 (2005) 325–356] and can be understood as a non-stabilized variant of the approach proposed in [Perugia et al., Comput. Methods Appl. Mech. Engrg. 191 (2002) 4675–4697]. We show the well-posedness of this approach and derive optimal...

Modeling, mathematical and numerical analysis of electrorheological fluids

Michael Růžička (2004)

Applications of Mathematics

Many electrorheological fluids are suspensions consisting of solid particles and a carrier oil. If such a suspension is exposed to a strong electric field the effective viscosity increases dramatically. In this paper we first derive a model which captures this behaviour. For the resulting system of equations we then prove local in time existence of strong solutions for large data. For these solutions we finally derive error estimates for a fully implicit time-discretization.

Multi-bump solutions for nonlinear Schrödinger equations with electromagnetic fields

Huirong Pi, Chunhua Wang (2013)

ESAIM: Control, Optimisation and Calculus of Variations

In this paper, we are concerned with the existence of multi-bump solutions for a nonlinear Schrödinger equations with electromagnetic fields. We prove under some suitable conditions that for any positive integer m, there exists ε(m) > 0 such that, for 0 < ε < ε(m), the problem has an m-bump complex-valued solution. As a result, when ε → 0, the equation has more and more multi-bump complex-valued solutions.

Néel and Cross-Tie wall energies for planar micromagnetic configurations

François Alouges, Tristan Rivière, Sylvia Serfaty (2002)

ESAIM: Control, Optimisation and Calculus of Variations

We study a two-dimensional model for micromagnetics, which consists in an energy functional over S 2 -valued vector fields. Bounded-energy configurations tend to be planar, except in small regions which can be described as vortices (Bloch lines in physics). As the characteristic “exchange-length” tends to 0, they converge to planar divergence-free unit norm vector fields which jump along line singularities. We derive lower bounds for the energy, which are explicit functions of the jumps of the limit....
