Finsler Conformal Lichnerowicz-Obata conjecture

V. S. Matveev, H.-B. Rademacher, M. Troyanov, A. Zeghib (2009)

Annales de l’institut Fourier

We prove the Finsler analog of the conformal Lichnerowicz-Obata conjecture showing that a complete and essential conformal vector field on a non-Riemannian Finsler manifold is a homothetic vector field of a Minkowski metric.

Fredholm spectrum and growth of cohomology groups

Jörg Eschmeier (2008)

Studia Mathematica

Let T ∈ L(E)ⁿ be a commuting tuple of bounded linear operators on a complex Banach space E and let σ F ( T ) = σ ( T ) σ e ( T ) be the non-essential spectrum of T. We show that, for each connected component M of the manifold R e g ( σ F ( T ) ) of all smooth points of σ F ( T ) , there is a number p ∈ 0, ..., n such that, for each point z ∈ M, the dimensions of the cohomology groups H p ( ( z - T ) k , E ) grow at least like the sequence ( k d ) k 1 with d = dim M.

General construction of Banach-Grassmann algebras

Vladimir G. Pestov (1992)

Atti della Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei. Classe di Scienze Fisiche, Matematiche e Naturali. Rendiconti Lincei. Matematica e Applicazioni

We show that a free graded commutative Banach algebra over a (purely odd) Banach space E is a Banach-Grassmann algebra in the sense of Jadczyk and Pilch if and only if E is infinite-dimensional. Thus, a large amount of new examples of separable Banach-Grassmann algebras arise in addition to the only one example previously known due to A. Rogers.

Generalized P-reducible (α,β)-metrics with vanishing S-curvature

A. Tayebi, H. Sadeghi (2015)

Annales Polonici Mathematici

We study one of the open problems in Finsler geometry presented by Matsumoto-Shimada in 1977, about the existence of a concrete P-reducible metric, i.e. one which is not C-reducible. In order to do this, we study a class of Finsler metrics, called generalized P-reducible metrics, which contains the class of P-reducible metrics. We prove that every generalized P-reducible (α,β)-metric with vanishing S-curvature reduces to a Berwald metric or a C-reducible metric. It follows that there is no concrete...

Generalized signature operators and spectral triples for the Kronecker foliation

R. Matthes, O. Richter, G. Rudolph (2003)

Banach Center Publications

We consider two spectral triples related to the Kronecker foliation. The corresponding generalized Dirac operators are constructed from first and second order signature operators. Furthermore, we consider the differential calculi corresponding to these spectral triples. In one case, the calculus has a description in terms of generators and relations, in the other case it is an "almost free" calculus.

Geometry of oblique projections

E. Andruchow, Gustavo Corach, D. Stojanoff (1999)

Studia Mathematica

Let A be a unital C*-algebra. Denote by P the space of selfadjoint projections of A. We study the relationship between P and the spaces of projections P a determined by the different involutions a induced by positive invertible elements a ∈ A. The maps φ : P P a sending p to the unique q P a with the same range as p and Ω a : P a P a sending q to the unitary part of the polar decomposition of the symmetry 2q-1 are shown to be diffeomorphisms. We characterize the pairs of idempotents q,r ∈ A with ||q-r|| < 1 such that...

Global left loop structures on spheres

Michael K. Kinyon (2000)

Commentationes Mathematicae Universitatis Carolinae

On the unit sphere 𝕊 in a real Hilbert space 𝐇 , we derive a binary operation such that ( 𝕊 , ) is a power-associative Kikkawa left loop with two-sided identity 𝐞 0 , i.e., it has the left inverse, automorphic inverse, and A l properties. The operation is compatible with the symmetric space structure of 𝕊 . ( 𝕊 , ) is not a loop, and the right translations which fail to be injective are easily characterized. ( 𝕊 , ) satisfies the left power alternative and left Bol identities “almost everywhere” but not everywhere....
