On a hybrid finite-volume-particle method

Alina Chertock, Alexander Kurganov (2010)

ESAIM: Mathematical Modelling and Numerical Analysis

We present a hybrid finite-volume-particle numerical method for computing the transport of a passive pollutant by a flow. The flow is modeled by the one- and two-dimensional Saint-Venant system of shallow water equations and the pollutant propagation is described by a transport equation. This paper is an extension of our previous work [Chertock, Kurganov and Petrova, J. Sci. Comput. (to appear)], where the one-dimensional finite-volume-particle method has been proposed. The core idea behind the...

On a nonlinear equation of the vibrating string

Angela Iannelli, Giovanni Prouse, Alessandro Veneziani (1994)

Atti della Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei. Classe di Scienze Fisiche, Matematiche e Naturali. Rendiconti Lincei. Matematica e Applicazioni

A nonlinear model of the vibrating string is studied and global existence and uniqueness theorems for the solution of the Cauchy-Dirichlet problem are given. The model is then compared to the classical D'Alembert model and to a nonlinear model due to Kirchhoff.

On a phase-field model with a logarithmic nonlinearity

Alain Miranville (2012)

Applications of Mathematics

Our aim in this paper is to study the existence of solutions to a phase-field system based on the Maxwell-Cattaneo heat conduction law, with a logarithmic nonlinearity. In particular, we prove, in one and two space dimensions, the existence of a solution which is separated from the singularities of the nonlinear term.

On a supplementary conservation law for a hyperbolic model of heat conductor

Mariano Torrisi, Antonino Valenti (1990)

Atti della Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei. Classe di Scienze Fisiche, Matematiche e Naturali. Rendiconti Lincei. Matematica e Applicazioni

In the context of the wave propagation theory in nonlinear hyperbolic systems, we analyse, in the case of a rigid heat conductor, the model proposed by G. Grioli. After introducing the constitutive relations according to the point of view of the extended thermodynamics, we look for the compatibility of the governing equations with a supplementary conservation law. We obtain the functional form of the constitutive quantities and we are able to show that the governing equations may be written in symmetric...

On a system of nonlinear wave equations with the Kirchhoff-Carrier and Balakrishnan-Taylor terms

Bui Duc Nam, Nguyen Huu Nhan, Le Thi Phuong Ngoc, Nguyen Thanh Long (2022)

Mathematica Bohemica

We study a system of nonlinear wave equations of the Kirchhoff-Carrier type containing a variant of the Balakrishnan-Taylor damping in nonlinear terms. By the linearization method together with the Faedo-Galerkin method, we prove the local existence and uniqueness of a weak solution. On the other hand, by constructing a suitable Lyapunov functional, a sufficient condition is also established to obtain the exponential decay of weak solutions.
