On the effect of temperature and velocity relaxation in two-phase flow models

Pedro José Martínez Ferrer, Tore Flåtten, Svend Tollak Munkejord (2011)

ESAIM: Mathematical Modelling and Numerical Analysis

We study a two-phase pipe flow model with relaxation terms in the momentum and energy equations, driving the model towards dynamic and thermal equilibrium. These equilibrium states are characterized by the velocities and temperatures being equal in each phase. For each of these relaxation processes, we consider the limits of zero and infinite relaxation times. By expanding on previously established results, we derive a formulation of the mixture sound velocity for the thermally relaxed model. This...

On the existence of solutions for some nondegenerate nonlinear wave equations of Kirchhoff type

Jong Yeoul Park, Jeong Ja Bae (2002)

Czechoslovak Mathematical Journal

Let Ω be a bounded domain in n with a smooth boundary Γ . In this work we study the existence of solutions for the following boundary value problem: 2 y t 2 - M Ω | y | 2 d x Δ y - t Δ y = f ( y ) in Q = Ω × ( 0 , ) , . 1 y = 0 in Σ 1 = Γ 1 × ( 0 , ) , M Ω | y | 2 d x y ν + t y ν = g in Σ 0 = Γ 0 × ( 0 , ) , y ( 0 ) = y 0 , y t ( 0 ) = y 1 in Ω , ( 1 ) where M is a C 1 -function such that M ( λ ) λ 0 > 0 for every λ 0 and f ( y ) = | y | α y for α 0 .

On the growth of the resolvent operators for power bounded operators

Olavi Nevanlinna (1997)

Banach Center Publications

Outline. In this paper I discuss some quantitative aspects related to power bounded operators T and to the decay of T n ( T - 1 ) . For background I refer to two recent surveys J. Zemánek [1994], C. J. K. Batty [1994]. Here I try to complement these two surveys in two different directions. First, if the decay of T n ( T - 1 ) is as fast as O(1/n) then quite strong conclusions can be made. The situation can be thought of as a discrete version of analytic semigroups; I try to motivate this in Section 1 by demonstrating the...

On the Maxwell-wave equation coupling problem and its explicit finite-element solution

Larisa Beilina, Vitoriano Ruas (2023)

Applications of Mathematics

It is well known that in the case of constant dielectric permittivity and magnetic permeability, the electric field solving the Maxwell's equations is also a solution to the wave equation. The converse is also true under certain conditions. Here we study an intermediate situation in which the magnetic permeability is constant and a region with variable dielectric permittivity is surrounded by a region with a constant one, in which the unknown field satisfies the wave equation. In this case, such...

On the numerical approximation of first-order Hamilton-Jacobi equations

Rémi Abgrall, Vincent Perrier (2007)

International Journal of Applied Mathematics and Computer Science

Some methods for the numerical approximation of time-dependent and steady first-order Hamilton-Jacobi equations are reviewed. Most of the discussion focuses on conformal triangular-type meshes, but we show how to extend this to the most general meshes. We review some first-order monotone schemes and also high-order ones specially dedicated to steady problems.

On the numerical performance of a sharp a posteriori error estimator for some nonlinear elliptic problems

Balázs Kovács (2014)

Applications of Mathematics

Karátson and Korotov developed a sharp upper global a posteriori error estimator for a large class of nonlinear problems of elliptic type, see J. Karátson, S. Korotov (2009). The goal of this paper is to check its numerical performance, and to demonstrate the efficiency and accuracy of this estimator on the base of quasilinear elliptic equations of the second order. The focus will be on the technical and numerical aspects and on the components of the error estimation, especially on the adequate...

On the optimization of initial conditions for a model parameter estimation

Matonoha, Ctirad, Papáček, Štěpán, Kindermann, Stefan (2017)

Programs and Algorithms of Numerical Mathematics

The design of an experiment, e.g., the setting of initial conditions, strongly influences the accuracy of the process of determining model parameters from data. The key concept relies on the analysis of the sensitivity of the measured output with respect to the model parameters. Based on this approach we optimize an experimental design factor, the initial condition for an inverse problem of a model parameter estimation. Our approach, although case independent, is illustrated at the FRAP (Fluorescence...

On the parameter in augmented Lagrangian preconditioning for isogeometric discretizations of the Navier-Stokes equations

Jiří Egermaier, Hana Horníková (2022)

Applications of Mathematics

In this paper, we deal with the optimal choice of the parameter γ for augmented Lagrangian preconditioning of GMRES method for efficient solution of linear systems obtained from discretization of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. We consider discretization of the equations using the B-spline based isogeometric analysis approach. We are interested in the dependence of the convergence on the parameter γ for various problem parameters (Reynolds number, mesh refinement) and especially for...
