Inertial law of quadratic forms on modules over plural algebra

Marek Jukl (1995)

Mathematica Bohemica

Quadratic forms on a free finite-dimensional module are investigated. It is shown that the inertial law can be suitably generalized provided the vector space is replaced by a free finite-dimensional module over a certain linear algebra over ( real plural algebra) introduced in [1].

Inertias and ranks of some Hermitian matrix functions with applications

Xiang Zhang, Qing-Wen Wang, Xin Liu (2012)

Open Mathematics

Let S be a given set consisting of some Hermitian matrices with the same size. We say that a matrix A ∈ S is maximal if A − W is positive semidefinite for every matrix W ∈ S. In this paper, we consider the maximal and minimal inertias and ranks of the Hermitian matrix function f(X,Y) = P − QXQ* − TYT*, where * means the conjugate and transpose of a matrix, P = P*, Q, T are known matrices and for X and Y Hermitian solutions to the consistent matrix equations AX =B and YC = D respectively. As applications,...

Inference for random effects in prime basis factorials using commutative Jordan algebras

Vera M. Jesus, Paulo Canas Rodrigues, João Tiago Mexia (2007)

Discussiones Mathematicae Probability and Statistics

Commutative Jordan algebras are used to drive an highly tractable framework for balanced factorial designs with a prime number p of levels for their factors. Both fixed effects and random effects models are treated. Sufficient complete statistics are obtained and used to derive UMVUE for the relevant parameters. Confidence regions are obtained and it is shown how to use duality for hypothesis testing.

Infinite dimensional linear groups with a large family of G -invariant subspaces

L. A. Kurdachenko, A. V. Sadovnichenko, I. Ya. Subbotin (2010)

Commentationes Mathematicae Universitatis Carolinae

Let F be a field, A be a vector space over F , GL ( F , A ) be the group of all automorphisms of the vector space A . A subspace B is called almost G -invariant, if dim F ( B / Core G ( B ) ) is finite. In the current article, we begin the study of those subgroups G of GL ( F , A ) for which every subspace of A is almost G -invariant. More precisely, we consider the case when G is a periodic group. We prove that in this case A includes a G -invariant subspace B of finite codimension whose subspaces are G -invariant.

Integer matrices related to Liouville's function

Shea-Ming Oon (2013)

Czechoslovak Mathematical Journal

In this note, we construct some integer matrices with determinant equal to certain summation form of Liouville's function. Hence, it offers a possible alternative way to explore the Prime Number Theorem by means of inequalities related to matrices, provided a better estimate on the relation between the determinant of a matrix and other information such as its eigenvalues is known. Besides, we also provide some comparisons on the estimate of the lower bound of the smallest singular value. Such discussion...

Intertwining of birth-and-death processes

Jan M. Swart (2011)

Kybernetika

It has been known for a long time that for birth-and-death processes started in zero the first passage time of a given level is distributed as a sum of independent exponentially distributed random variables, the parameters of which are the negatives of the eigenvalues of the stopped process. Recently, Diaconis and Miclo have given a probabilistic proof of this fact by constructing a coupling between a general birth-and-death process and a process whose birth rates are the negatives of the eigenvalues,...

Interval algorithm for absolute value equations

Aixiang Wang, Haijun Wang, Yongkun Deng (2011)

Open Mathematics

We investigate the absolute value equations Ax−|x| = b. Based on ɛ-inflation, an interval verification method is proposed. Theoretic analysis and numerical results show that the new proposed method is effective.

Interval fuzzy matrix equations

Emília Draženská, Helena Myšková (2017)

Kybernetika

This paper deals with the solvability of interval matrix equations in fuzzy algebra. Fuzzy algebra is the algebraic structure in which the classical addition and multiplication are replaced by maximum and minimum, respectively. The notation 𝐀 X 𝐂 = 𝐁 , where 𝐀 , 𝐁 , 𝐂 are given interval matrices and X is an unknown matrix, represents an interval system of matrix equations. We can define several types of solvability of interval fuzzy matrix equations. In this paper, we shall deal with four of them. We define the...
