Additional note on partial regularity of weak solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations in the class L ( 0 , T , L 3 ( Ω ) 3 )

Zdeněk Skalák (2003)

Applications of Mathematics

We present a simplified proof of a theorem proved recently concerning the number of singular points of weak solutions to the Navier-Stokes equations. If a weak solution 𝐮 belongs to L ( 0 , T , L 3 ( Ω ) 3 ) , then the set of all possible singular points of 𝐮 in Ω is at most finite at every time t 0 ( 0 , T ) .

Adiabatic approximation for a two-level atom in a light beam

Amandine Aftalion, Francis Nier (2013)

Annales de la faculté des sciences de Toulouse Mathématiques

Following the recent experimental realization of synthetic gauge potentials, Jean Dalibard addressed the question whether the adiabatic ansatz could be mathematically justified for a model of an atom in 2 internal states, shone by a quasi resonant laser beam. In this paper, we derive rigorously the asymptotic model guessed by the physicists, and show that this asymptotic analysis contains the information about the presence of vortices. Surprisingly, the main difficulties do not come from the nonlinear...

Adiabatic Evolution of Coupled Waves for a Schrödinger-Korteweg-de Vries System

W. Abou Salem (2012)

Mathematical Modelling of Natural Phenomena

The effective dynamics of interacting waves for coupled Schrödinger-Korteweg-de Vries equations over a slowly varying random bottom is rigorously studied. One motivation for studying such a system is better understanding the unidirectional motion of interacting surface and internal waves for a fluid system that is formed of two immiscible layers. It was shown recently by Craig-Guyenne-Sulem [1] that in the regime where the internal wave has a large...

Air entrainment in transient flows in closed water pipes : A two-layer approach

C. Bourdarias, M. Ersoy, Stéphane Gerbi (2013)

ESAIM: Mathematical Modelling and Numerical Analysis - Modélisation Mathématique et Analyse Numérique

In this paper, we first construct a model for free surface flows that takes into account the air entrainment by a system of four partial differential equations. We derive it by taking averaged values of gas and fluid velocities on the cross surface flow in the Euler equations (incompressible for the fluid and compressible for the gas). The obtained system is conditionally hyperbolic. Then, we propose a mathematical kinetic interpretation of this system to finally construct a two-layer kinetic scheme...

Alcune osservazioni sulle onde magnetoacustiche

Giulio Mattei (1990)

Atti della Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei. Classe di Scienze Fisiche, Matematiche e Naturali. Rendiconti Lincei. Matematica e Applicazioni

Algebro-geometric approach to the Ernst equation I. Mathematical Preliminaries

O. Richter, C. Klein (1997)

Banach Center Publications

1. Introduction. It is well known that methods of algebraic geometry and, in particular, Riemann surface techniques are well suited for the solution of nonlinear integrable equations. For instance, for nonlinear evolution equations, so called 'finite gap' solutions have been found by the help of these methods. In 1989 Korotkin [9] succeeded in applying these techniques to the Ernst equation, which is equivalent to Einstein's vacuum equation for axisymmetric stationary fields. But, the Ernst equation...

Algebro-geometric solutions of the Camassa-Holm hierarchy.

Fritz Gesztesy, Helge Holden (2003)

Revista Matemática Iberoamericana

We provide a detailed treatment of the Camassa-Holm (CH) hierarchy with special emphasis on its algebro-geometric solutions. In analogy to other completely integrable hierarchies of soliton equations such as the KdV or AKNS hierarchies, the CH hierarchy is recursively constructed by means of a basic polynomial formalism invoking a spectral parameter. Moreover, we study Dubrovin-type equations for auxiliary divisors and associated trace formulas, consider the corresponding algebro-geometric initial...

Almost global solutions of the free boundary problem for the equations of a magnetohydrodynamic incompressible fluid

Piotr Kacprzyk (2004)

Applicationes Mathematicae

Almost global in time existence of solutions for equations describing the motion of a magnetohydrodynamic incompressible fluid in a domain bounded by a free surfaced is proved. In the exterior domain we have an electromagnetic field which is generated by some currents which are located on a fixed boundary. We prove that a solution exists for t ∈ (0,T), where T > 0 is large if the data are small.

Almost sure global well-posedness for the radial nonlinear Schrödinger equation on the unit ball II: the 3d case

Jean Bourgain, Aynur Bulut (2014)

Journal of the European Mathematical Society

We extend the convergence method introduced in our works [8–10] for almost sure global well-posedness of Gibbs measure evolutions of the nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) and nonlinear wave (NLW) equations on the unit ball in d to the case of the three dimensional NLS. This is the first probabilistic global well-posedness result for NLS with supercritical data on the unit ball in 3 . The initial data is taken as a Gaussian random process lying in the support of the Gibbs measure associated to the equation,...

Almost sure well-posedness for the periodic 3D quintic nonlinear Schrödinger equation below the energy space

Andrea R. Nahmod, Gigliola Staffilani (2015)

Journal of the European Mathematical Society

We also prove a long time existence result; more precisely we prove that for fixed T > 0 there exists a set Σ T , ( Σ T ) > 0 such that any data φ ω ( x ) H γ ( 𝕋 3 ) , γ < 1 , ω Σ T , evolves up to time T into a solution u ( t ) with u ( t ) - e i t Δ φ ω C ( [ 0 , T ] ; H s ( 𝕋 3 ) ) , s = s ( γ ) > 1 . In particular we find a nontrivial set of data which gives rise to long time solutions below the critical space H 1 ( 𝕋 3 ) , that is in the supercritical scaling regime.

An analysis of noise propagation in the multiscale simulation of coarse Fokker-Planck equations

Yves Frederix, Giovanni Samaey, Dirk Roose (2011)

ESAIM: Mathematical Modelling and Numerical Analysis - Modélisation Mathématique et Analyse Numérique

We consider multiscale systems for which only a fine-scale model describing the evolution of individuals (atoms, molecules, bacteria, agents) is given, while we are interested in the evolution of the population density on coarse space and time scales. Typically, this evolution is described by a coarse Fokker-Planck equation. In this paper, we consider a numerical procedure to compute the solution of this Fokker-Planck equation directly on the coarse level, based on the estimation of the unknown...
