A remark about a Galerkin method

It is shown that the approximating equations whose existence is required in the author's previous work on partially regular weak solutions can be constructed without any additional assumption about the equation itself. This leads to a variation of a Galerkin method.

We study the homogeneous Riemann-Hilbert problem with a vanishing scalar-valued continuous coefficient. We characterize non-existence of nontrivial solutions in the case where the coefficient has its values along several rays starting from the origin. As a consequence, some results on injectivity and existence of eigenvalues of Toeplitz operators in Hardy spaces are obtained.

A shape optimization approach for a class of free boundary problems of Bernoulli type

Applications of Mathematics

We are interested in an optimal shape design formulation for a class of free boundary problems of Bernoulli type. We show the existence of the optimal solution of this problem by proving continuity of the solution of the state problem with respect to the domain. The main tools in establishing such a continuity are a result concerning uniform continuity of the trace operator with respect to the domain and a recent result on the uniform Poincaré inequality for variable domains.
